Jim Furyk, a 17-time PGA Tour winner and the 2003 U.S. Open champion, will captain the United States Ryder Cup team next year in Ireland, according to the Associated Press.
For Furyk, this will be his second time captaining the U.S. squad, as he led the team in 2018, when Europe won in a rout.
Furyk takes back the reins as the U.S. faces serious questions heading into next year’s event. The U.S. has lost two straight and nine of the last 12 Ryder Cups. Last year’s edition of the bi-annual event that pits the U.S. vs. Europe saw the American squad dig itself a massive hole over the first two days of competition, too much of a deficit that not even a final-day rally could bring the Cup back to the U.S.
And while the European squad has been the model of stability, captained by Luke Donald, the U.S. has been anything but. Keegan Bradley was handed the captaincy last year in what some viewed as a make-good for not being named to the team as a player in 2023. It did not go well. The U.S. went into the final day of competition facing a 7-point deficit and ultimately lost 15-13.
Conventional wisdom pointed to Tiger Woods as the ideal captain in 2025, but Woods reportedly turned down the job due to time constraints as he was heavily involved in the reshaping of the PGA Tour.
Woods would have been the top choice to lead the team to Adare Manor in 2027, where the event will take place next September, but his DUI arrest in March meant the U.S. had to pivot.
Furyk competed as a player in nine Ryder Cups, compiling a 10-20-4 record. He served as a vice captain under Bradley last year at Bethpage Black. He also captained the 2024 Presidents Cup team to victory.
Furyk certainly has his work cut out for him. He will be facing the proven winner in Donald, who will try to become the first to ever captain a team to three straight Ryder Cups. Furyk will also have to overcome the curse of European soil, on which the Americans have not won since 1993.
The 2027 Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor, beginning Sept. 27, 2027.
