The next time Bayern Munich is awarded a penalty, the squad might have to circle the wagons.
After VfL Wolfsburg defender Jeanuël Belocian tore up the area near the spot, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane missed his attempt, which set off a storm of controversy.
The most recent voices to chime in were Stefan Effenberg and Friedhelm Funkel (as captured by Tz).
“Normally, you always have one or two players there to protect the penalty spot. Or the player taking the penalty himself checks and verifies everything again,” Effenberg said during an appearance on Sport1-Doppelpass. “Of course, we don’t want that, but I also have a little understanding for it. Everything is at stake for Wolfsburg. I wouldn’t say it was grossly unsportsmanlike; it was unsportsmanlike, but oh well…serves him right.”
Funkel agreed.
“I think it’s clever,” said Funkel. “Of course, with a touch of unsportsmanlike conduct, no question about it. But I remember doing something similar myself in the past.”
Maybe next time it would just be easier for Bayern Munich to get into a Roman battle formation and protect the spot?
