New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Domínguez made a highlight reel catch in the top of the first inning on Thursday against the Texas Rangers.
Unfortunately, the play saw Domínguez hit his back hard against the outfield LED screen. He stayed down for several minutes, was tended to by trainers and left the game on the medical cart.
After the game, manager Aaron Boone was asked for an update. He said that Domínguez’s concussion tests had all been negative. Boone did say, though, that
The outfielder was diagnosed with a low-grade AC sprain in his left shoulder and will go on the IL. Domínguez is expected to miss “a few weeks.” In a corresponding move, the Yankees called up their No. 6 prospect Spencer Jones.
Domínguez’s injury occurred during the first at-bat of the game. Rangers DH Brandon Nimmo worked a 3-2 count and sent the ball deep into left field. Domínguez backpedaled before leaping to make the catch.
While he was trailing to his left, it doesn’t look like he found the wall, which may have been why the impact looked so harsh.
The New York outfielder stayed facedown for several minutes, but was moving, so there wasn’t concern that he was knocked out. Trainers helped him to his knees and then tested his shoulder and neck. As he left on the cart, Domínguez was seen shaking his head.
After the injury, New York had to shuffle around its lineup. Officially, Domínguez was replaced by Ryan McMahon, who took over at third. Amed Rosario moved to right field, and Cody Bellinger slid to left field.
Domínguez has battled injuries throughout his career. Earlier this week, he was hit by a pitch and had to have an MRI on his elbow, but avoided a trip to the injured list. The outfielder has played in only eight games this season and is hitting .200 with one home run and four RBI.
