The Montreal Canadiens are heading to the NHL‘s Eastern Conference Finals after Alex Newhook delivered another unforgettable Game 7 moment. Montreal defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 in overtime on Monday night, with Newhook scoring the winner 11:22 into the extra period.
Newhook’s overtime winner came after Buffalo defenseman Rasmus Dahlin tied the game in the third period. Montreal quickly turned defense into attack after a Sabres turnover by Tage Thompson. Jake Evans pushed the puck up the right side before Newhook moved into position near the left faceoff circle.
Using Dahlin as a screen, Newhook fired a heavy wrist shot that beat goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen under the glove and inside the far post. The goal sparked a wild celebration as Montreal secured its first trip to the NHL semifinal round since 2021.

This was not the first time Newhook rescued Montreal in a deciding game. Earlier in the playoffs, he scored the winning goal in Game 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
That goal came late in the third period after defenseman Lane Hutson created a rebound in front of the net. Newhook reacted instantly, batting the puck out of midair with a backhand effort that slipped past Andrei Vasilevskiy for a 2-1 win.
“It’s a crazy feeling,” Newhook said after Monday’s victory. “It’s fun. It’s why you play the game. I think we played well enough to win, so we’re looking forward now.”
