According to a report by Sport1 (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich will not allow Alphonso Davies to go to the World Cup if they are not satisfied with his treatment. The decision to participate in the World Cup will not be taken by Canada Soccer, after the disastrous misdiagnosis of Davies’ ACL tear in March 2025.
The main condition that FC Bayern have put forward is that Davies will be handled specifically by the club’s own medical staff. Clearance to play rests on them, not the Canadian federation’s medical team. Seems reasonable.
Again, said medical team failed to notice the player was carrying an ACL injury when they cleared him to return to Munich last year. It was only discovered when Bayern Munich put him through an MRI after his return.
The player has already been made aware of Bayern Munich’s terms. Now, it all rests on his shoulders. Depending on how quickly he recovers, Alphonso Davies could make it back in time for the last couple of Canada’s group stage games.
Will that be enough to satisfy the player and the federation? Or will this drive a further wedge between Canada Soccer and Bayern Munich.
