The NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season is Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. That is not a surprise because the Thunder had the best record in the league and Gilgeous-Alexander was their best player and leader once again. However, what may be a surprise is that Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets finished second in the MVP voting, gaining a fairly significant edge on Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs, who finished third in the voting.
Throughout the season, it was expected that the MVP vote would could down to Gilgeous-Alexander and Wembanyama. The Spurs had the second-best record in the league and the big center turned potential into production with his performance throughout the regular season.
However, MVP voters fully respect Jokic and the contribution he made to the Nuggets once again this season. He has finished in the top two of the award’s voting results for six consecutive seasons.
Jokic is a three-time MVP winner in his career and a seven-time All-NBA player. The 31-year-old averaged a triple-double this season. He scored 27.7 points per night and he also contributed 12.7 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game. Jokic has played 11 seasons in the NBA and all of them have been with the Nuggets.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points per game and shot 55.3 percent from the field. He also handed out 6.6 assists per game, and both his shooting percentage and his assists represented career-highs.
Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers finished fourth in the voting while Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons finished fifth. Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics was sixth in the MVP vote.
