Kentucky Derby fifth-place finisher Danon Bourbon exited the 1 ¼-mile race with a knee chip, according to a social media post by Japanese racing liaison Kate Hunter.
“He will undergo surgery at the Shadai Clinic and take the rest of the year off to heal,” Hunter wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Danon Bourbon earned his spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate via an invite from the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. He won each of his three starts in Japan, including the Fukuryu Stakes at Nakayama Racecourse.
Danon Bourbon is trained by Manabu Ikezeo for Danox Co. Ltd.
A member of Maxfield’s first crop, Danon Bourbon was bred by Blue Haven Farm in Kentucky. He was sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $450,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
He is out of the Tapit mare Wild Ridge.
